History of Martial Arts in Korea is very long. The oldest evidence of the sculptures and paintings were found in tombs dynasty Muyong Chong (who lived in the 3rd century BC) showing warriors in combat positions. At that time Korea was divided into three kingdoms, and each of them had a strong army, which are studied skill fight without weapons, which is called Subak. Later, Subak developed the skill name Taekkyon which is often used in military demostrations and tournaments where they are competing with each other Warriors. This is particularly expressive during the Koryo dynasty (918th - 1392nd), which unites the three kingdoms, and when the competition in Taekkyon to use for the purpose of finding talented soldiers and even soldiers in the appointment of officers. Through the centuries many Taekkyon develop specific leg techniques.

During the Japanese occupation of Korea, all martial arts are strictly prohibited and Taekkyon practically extinctions. Many people go from Korea to Japan to study and to learn about karate. After the Second World War and Japanese occupation of Korea in the back and opened the school martial art skills, which were mostly variations karate. The influence of Taekkyon skills develop many specific pedal techniquesby different names, forms, that were not consolidated yet.
Soon, the owners of the school wish to be united, to unite all styles in one Korean martial arts. New skills at the beginning werw called TaeSooDo, but soon changed its name in TaeKwonDo and starts the process of unification. 1961. the Korean Taekwondo Union was founded as the first udrušena organization in 1965. has changed in the Korean Taekwondo Association, a name which is used today.

Beside the efforts of taekwondo first-generation masters who tried to unite Taekwondo one standardized martial arts, it was not entirely successful. The main friction in the taekwondo is a division of the kukki-Taekwondo (International presented the WTF) and ITF Taekwondo.
In addition to the forms and rules of combat sports, two taekwondo styles differ by name, and basic techniques. Taekwondo is Kukki-train in South Korea, while North Korea is present only ITF Taekwondo.
Kukki-Taekwondo (Kukkiwon) was created in 1972, as an organization that cares about the technical part of and its standardization. World supreme organization WTF a year later, in 1973. It should be noted that the WTF only deals with the organization of the tournament and is not engaged in issuing the belt or the development of form, which is responsible for the Kukkiwon. For participation in WTF tournaments and Olympic Games, it is necessary to have the official certificate of title, issued by Kukkiwona.
ITF is a bit older organization, founded by General Choi Hong Hi in 1966, after which he decided to separate from the process of unification and left the Korean Taekwondo Association in order to established his own style. ITF taekwondo issued certificates of rank, and organize international tournaments. After the death of General Choi, ITF is divided into three organizations, North Korean ITF, which leads his son, Vienna and Montreal ITF ITF. All three organizations claim for themselves the true successor Choi ITF. At this time, the future of the ITF is an issue.
Since the WTF Taekwondo is fight by the rules it become Olympic discipline, kukki-Taekwondo is quite strong, because many fighters go to the kukki-Taekwondo to be eligible at the Olympic Games. This is one of the reasons why kukki-day Taekwondo is far the most popular style. Last wish of General Choi was the final unification of , could be achieved because the WTF and the North Korean ITF are currently negotiate unifying and assimilation of technical differences.
